The Women’s Premier League (WPL) second season is set to captivate spectators. On February 23, the defending champions Mumbai Indians will face the runners-up Delhi Capitals in the first game in Bengaluru. After considerable uncertainty a year ago, the maiden season of the WPL was a resounding success, with all five competing clubs dazzling fans with exciting play. With that said, as cricket fans prepare for an intriguing and fierce sporting exhibition, let us rate the five teams based on squad strength ahead of what looks to be another fascinating WPL season.

Mumbai Indians- 9/10

The defending champions, Mumbai Indians, have been a team doing well on the field and the auctions. With an impeccable start to their female cricket stint, the team has made a strong and consistent team for the upcoming second edition. The team would leave no stone unturned to clinch their second consecutive title. In the auction, the Mumbai Indians added another top player to their roster. Shabnim Ismail, a senior pacer from South Africa, joined MI for INR 1.2 Crore to round up their bowling assault.

Along with Ismail, Mumbai acquired uncapped Indian players Keerthana Balakrishnan, Amandeep Kaur, S Sajana, and Fatima Jaffer. In the forthcoming tournament, MI will defend the championship under Harmanpreet Kaur, and the team management would want their elite veterans to come up and play aggressive cricket.

Delhi Capitals- 8.5/10

Despite losing in the final of the first WPL to the Mumbai Indians (MI), the Delhi Capitals (DC) were the best team during the league rounds, with six victories in eight games. Led by the great Meg Lanning, the team added Australian batting all-rounder Annabel Sutherland to the auction. Despite finishing as the leading run-scorer the previous season, Lanning’s retirement and lack of playing time may cause a drop in form.

DC has a well-balanced batting lineup that includes Lanning, Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, and the much-improved Jemimah Rodrigues, followed by all-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Sutherland. With Shikka Pandey, Jess Jonassen, Radha Yadav, and Poonam Yadav, the Capitals have a pretty powerful bowling assault. Thanks to their robust arsenal, the team will undoubtedly be motivated after falling short last year.

Royal Challengers Bangalore- 8/10

Prominently known for their loyal fan base and star-studded team, Royal Challengers Bangalore will be a team to check out in the coming WPL edition. Though they had a forgettable last edition, the team has revamped post the auction and is eager to make an impact. The team has the ultimate match-winner at the top of the order, Smriti Mandhana, and the most accomplished all-rounder, Ellyse Perry. However, obtaining ultimate greatness requires more than just a few match-winning players. RCB may once again need to catch up in those areas.

Despite making a few tactical changes to improve their lower-order batting and bowling depth with the additions of Georgia Wareham, Kate Cross, Ekta Bisht, and Sophie Molineux, the squad still needs more punch than the other four competing teams. Overall, it would be a season to check out for the Red Army, and there is no sign of a down in entertainment by the team.

Gujarat Giants- 7/10

Following their poor performance in the inaugural WPL season, the Gujarat Giants released non-performing players before the auction. The franchise kept just eight players, including prominent stars like Beth Mooney, Ashleigh Gardner, Laura Wolvaardt, Shabnam Shakil, Harleen Deol, and Sneh Rana.

The Gujarat-based outlet signed current artists Phoebe Litchfield, Lauren Cheatle, and Kathryn Bryce at the auction. The squad has also shown confidence in India’s indigenous talents, Kashvee Gautam, Trisha Poojitha, and Meghna Singh. Gautam’s services were reserved for a large sum of INR 2 crore. Overall, the Giants significantly lack lower middle-order and fast-bowling abilities, and these two areas may prevent the team from accomplishing their ultimate goal of capturing their first WPL title.

UP Warriorz- 6/10

UP Warriorz already had seasoned players on their roster, including captain Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Ecclestone, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad. During the auction, they recruited another veteran, Danni Wyatt, known for exceptional hitting abilities. They can produce stunning numbers for the squad. The club also acquired India’s uncapped all-rounder Poonam Khemnar, who now plays domestic cricket for Nagaland Women.

The Warriorz has also spent INR 1.3 crore on Vrinda Dinesh, who has demonstrated her abilities while playing for Karnataka Women on the domestic circuit. However, the team would dearly miss the experienced Indian players on their squad, who can understand the Indian conditions better and benefit the team, possibly creating some tricky scenarios for the squad.

The 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) opening ceremony will be illuminated by popular Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan. This event is scheduled to take place on Friday, February 23 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The likes of Tiger Shroff, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Kartik Aaryan and Sidharth Malhotra are just but a few among the many stars that will grace this occasion.

Shah Rukh Khan still rules supreme as the king of Bollywood even at his age at 58 making him one of the leading actors in India film industry. Last year he had two big hits Pathaan and Dunki that not only rocked domestically but also made international headlines.

Women’s Premier League 2024: Shahrukh Khan Headlines Star-Studded Opening Ceremony

For Shah Rukh Khan cricket has been his passion since 2008 when he became owner of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL). He has played a key role in helping KKR expand from a single team to having franchises based out of several countries such as West Indies, UAE and USA.

Bengaluru was the venue for an engrossing performance by Bollywood superstars. The Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) will play the opening game of the tournament. It will be a re-match of last year’s final with Harmanpreet Kaur taking her DC side against MI.

Alyssa Healy led UP Warriorz to the Eliminator stage last season, where they however fell to the Mumbai team. Both Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as well as Gujarat Giants (GT) failed to reach playoffs last season and are looking forward to bouncing back.

As the auction commenced on the 13th of this month at the Jio Global Convention Centre, the five franchises created their teams for the Women’s Premier League inaugural season using the conventional process (WPL).

The tournament’s first edition is scheduled in Mumbai from March 4 to March 26. In this journal, we see each franchise’s top picks for their respective arsenals under the hammer.

Royal Challengers Bangalore- Smriti Mandhana

Smriti Mandhana, the first player being under the hammer, drew a fierce bidding battle between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, with the latter finally luring her in for a staggering Rs 3.4 crore. It made Mandhana the most expensive auction choice and provided Royal Challengers Bangalore with the choice of a suitable and prospective Indian captain.

Mumbai Indians- Natalie Sciver

Natalie Sciver, the impeccable English all-rounder, became the second most expensive player in the inaugural WPL for a colossal Rs 3.2 Crore. And of course, the Mumbai Indians squad’s top pick. Sciver broke into the scene as a skiddy medium-pace bowler, but she enhanced her batting abilities significantly. Sciver holds the distinction of becoming the first bowler in T20 cricket to record a hat-trick. She was a member of England’s World Cup-winning side in 2017 and was named one of five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2018 for her contribution to the success.

Delhi Capitals- Jemimah Rodrigues

Jemimah Rodrigues, a phenomenal top-order batter has got roped in by the Delhi Capitals for a staggering Rs. 2.2 Crore. She is undoubtedly the most talented next-generation player on the Indian women’s squad right now. The amount of time she gets to play shots and her easy power-hitting talents, in particular, distinguish her. Adding cherry to the cake, she is an excellent fielder who can play wherever on the field.

Gujarat Giants- Ashleigh Gardner

The new franchise, Gujarat Giants, has broken the bank by acquiring the Aussie off-spinning allrounder Ashleigh Gardner for a whooping Rs 3.2 Cr, making her the second most expensive buy of the season. Gardner has blossomed into a burgeoning star to watch as Australia looks to recapture tonnes of skill with both bat and ball. She went on to play a pivotal part in Australia’s World Cup campaign, and Ashes win.

UP Warriorz- Deepti Sharma

The Agra-born seasoned Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma is all set to represent her home state, UP Warriors. Being bought for a colossal Rs 2.6 Crore, she’s hailed as the second most expensive Indian player in the recent WPL auction. Also, she would be the team’s vice-captain in the upcoming season.

The Lucknow franchise of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), owned by Capri Global Holdings Private Limited, will be known as UP Warriorz. One of the five teams of this year’s WPL, the UP Warriorz was bought by Capri Global Holdings Private Limited for Rs 757 crore at an auction hosted by the BCCI. UP Warriorz’s logo comprises four components — a rendition of the sarus crane, a sword, wings that extend out like the rays of the sun, and a shield to hold it all together.

Former England cricketer Jon Lewis has been appointed as the head coach of the team, while Arjuna awardee Anju Jain will be the assistant coach. Former Australian cricketer Ashley Noffke will be the bowling coach, while four-time world champion from Australia Lisa Sthalekar will be the mentor. Lewis, the current head coach of the England women’s team, is vastly experienced and has bagged more than 1200 wickets in over 500 games, internationally and domestically.

Capri Global-owned franchise named UP Warriorz

Well known in the English county circuit, Lewis was the bowling coach for the England men’s team in 2021, and worked with an elite group of bowlers like Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes. “I am delighted to be part of the Capri Global Holdings Private Limited family with the UP Warriorz and expect this to be a fascinating insight into the depth of cricket in India and a high-octane ride for the next couple of months,” Lewis said in a statement issued by the franchise.

“The WPL is a huge step forward for women’s cricket globally and I am excited to be an integral part of this journey. Having Anju Jain, Ashley Noffke and Lisa Sthalekar who bring in a diverse set of experiences to the dugout can only make the task a whole lot easier.” The WPL is set to be played in Mumbai from March 4 to 26. A total of 22 matches will be played with the Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium playing host to the marquee tournament. The Player Auction for the WPL will be held in Mumbai on February 13.
