Melbourne Renegades Women won their first Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) trophy after beating the two-time champions Brisbane Heat Women in the final of the WBBL 2024-25 by seven runs (DLS method). The Caribbean star Hayley Mattews played a crucial all-round role in her team’s title victory. 

Melbourne Renegades Women and Brisbane Heat Women both finished the WBBL 2024-25 league stage with 14 points each after recording seven wins and three defeats. While the points table leader Renegades directly advanced to the final, thanks to the higher net run rate (0.527), the second placed Heat (net run rate 0.384) had to beat the Knockout winners Sydney Thunder Women in the Challenger to qualify for the final. 

After Heat skipper Jess Jonassen chose to field first, Renegades scored 141/9. When Heat were batting at 19/2 in 3.2 overs, rain interrupted the chasing. Later, Heat had to chase the revised target of 98 runs in 12 overs in the DLS method, and they were restricted to 90/6 in 12 overs.

Hayley Matthews scored 69 runs

Opener Hayley Matthews fought hard in the first batting, as her 69 off 61 balls (eight fours) had a massive role in the Renegades' challenging total. Middle-order batters Georgia Wareham (21) and Naomi Stalenberg (16) were the only other batters for the team to manage the double-digit scores. Among the Heat bowlers, Charli Knott (3/28) and Grace Parsons (2/29) claimed multiple wickets.

In reply, captain Jess Jonassen fought hard for the revised target, but she didn't get proper support from the other end. While the opener Georgia Redmayne scored 16 runs, she was the second-most run-scorer in that chase. Jonassen scored 44 not out off 28 balls with five fours and one six, while Nicola Hancock had a 22-run partnership with the skipper for the unbroken seventh wicket, but they just fell short of the target.

After scoring a valuable 69 runs, Hayley Matthews took two wickets, as she ended with the bowling figures of 3-0-24-2. While she shined as an all-rounder, she won the Player of the Match award without any doubt. 

As the 10th edition of the WBBL comes to a close, there are only two teams left to compete for the championship on Sunday. The Melbourne Renegades will face the Brisbane Heat on the iconic MCG.

Bates opens up on her challenges

After enduring a below-par 2023-24 WBBL season, Bates believed that her cricketing career was fast approaching a close. She realized that she may not have a lot of cricket left in her and began thinking that the 2024 season could be her last in all likelihood. 

Last season, Bates only managed to pick up five wickets and had made up her mind to shift her focus to academics. She traveled back to Newcastle to prioritize her paramedics degree.

"It put life in perspective. I actually decided early on, if this was my last season of cricket, that was going to be OK.  It took a huge weight off my shoulders, not putting any pressure on me to try and be someone different or bowl something I am not good at. If I was going to not have a contract it would suck, but I would still be okay. I think that's what's also put a real big clarity on where I was going to bowl and led to good bowling performances."

How did Bates manage to achieve a turnaround?

Bates' 2023-24 summer season was overshadowed by injury and walked into last year's WBBL season with a foot issue. Moreover, the finger spinner was also mentally drained and exhausted while trying to bowl like someone she was not. 

"There was definitely a mental drain last year. What I came up with I was just putting so much pressure on myself to be someone I wasn't, to be a cricketer that I wasn't."

But she admits that a little bit of pep talk with Lisa Sthalekar instilled a lot of self-belief and confidence in her. She worked with her before the start of the season which helped her assess her style of bowling which in turn went a long way in shaping her cricketing personality. 

"I was able to work with Lisa Sthalekar a little bit in the pre-season this year to work out who I was and what I wanted to bowl. And I just wanted to own that."

Bates' stunning exhibition of spin bowling has put the Thunder in a dominating position in the points table but they will still need to secure three straight wins to clinch the title after a last-start loss to the Melbourne Renegades. At present, Bates is the second highest-wicket taker of the tournament trailing by Alana King who is sitting at the top with 20 wickets.
