The Lucknow franchise of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), owned by Capri Global Holdings Private Limited, will be known as UP Warriorz. One of the five teams of this year’s WPL, the UP Warriorz was bought by Capri Global Holdings Private Limited for Rs 757 crore at an auction hosted by the BCCI. UP Warriorz’s logo comprises four components — a rendition of the sarus crane, a sword, wings that extend out like the rays of the sun, and a shield to hold it all together.

Former England cricketer Jon Lewis has been appointed as the head coach of the team, while Arjuna awardee Anju Jain will be the assistant coach. Former Australian cricketer Ashley Noffke will be the bowling coach, while four-time world champion from Australia Lisa Sthalekar will be the mentor. Lewis, the current head coach of the England women’s team, is vastly experienced and has bagged more than 1200 wickets in over 500 games, internationally and domestically.

Capri Global-owned franchise named UP Warriorz

Well known in the English county circuit, Lewis was the bowling coach for the England men’s team in 2021, and worked with an elite group of bowlers like Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Ben Stokes. “I am delighted to be part of the Capri Global Holdings Private Limited family with the UP Warriorz and expect this to be a fascinating insight into the depth of cricket in India and a high-octane ride for the next couple of months,” Lewis said in a statement issued by the franchise.

“The WPL is a huge step forward for women’s cricket globally and I am excited to be an integral part of this journey. Having Anju Jain, Ashley Noffke and Lisa Sthalekar who bring in a diverse set of experiences to the dugout can only make the task a whole lot easier.” The WPL is set to be played in Mumbai from March 4 to 26. A total of 22 matches will be played with the Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium playing host to the marquee tournament. The Player Auction for the WPL will be held in Mumbai on February 13.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will allow five foreign players in the playing XI of the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL. As per reports, BCCI also stated that at least one cricketer from an associate nation is allowed in the XI. Unlike the IPL rules, where four overseas players are allowed, the 5th player has to be from an associate nation. As mentioned by one of the sources from a potential new franchise.

“The teams will have the option of fielding five foreign players as long as the fifth player is from an Associate nation,” a source was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.

While there hasn’t been confirmation of the starting date of the WIPL. It is expected to commence on March 4 and is likely to conclude on 26th March.

BCCI sets player purse for the five-year circle

BCCI has also set INR 12 crore as the salary cap for the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) which will launch next month. The salary cap will continue to increase throughout the course of five years. Will have an annual increment of INR 1.5 crore. By the end of the five-year cycle, the cap will increase to INR 18 crore. Unlike the opening edition of the IPL, there is no slot for icon players in the five-franchise tournament.

Reports in Cricbuzz further mentioned that the potential participants were told by the BCCI on Thursday, January 19. That the player’s purse will start with INR 12 Cr in 2023, will increase to INR 13.5 Cr in 2024. INR 16.5 crore in 2026 and eventually INR 18 crore in the final year of the cycle in 2027. This has been the guideline set for the first five years. While five teams will be part of the WIPL in the first three years, it will increase to six teams in the last two years of the cycle.

The long-awaited women’s IPL is set to become a reality next year with the BCCI planning to conduct a five-team tournament in March 2023. Immediately after the women’ T20 World Cup ends in South Africa on February 26. The BCCI’s proposed plan involves a total of 22 matches in the league, with each squad comprising 18 players with a maximum of six from overseas. No more than five overseas players can feature in a playing XI. With four from Full Member countries and one from an Associate nation.

As per the plan, which the BCCI sent on Thursday to state associations, each team will play the others twice (20 matches). The second finalist will be decided via an Eliminator contest between the second and third-ranked teams in the league phase. Which is likely at the end of March 2023. Teams could play each other twice in the league stage a la IPL, with the team finishing top of the table qualifying directly for the final. The second and third-placed teams will be playing an Eliminator.

BCCI considering having 5 teams in the women’s IPL, 5 overseas players in the playing XI

“It will be a challenge to play the WIPL in the home and away format. Because with five to six teams it is not possible to have a match every day,” the BCCI said in its paper on the WIPL. Where after finishing ten matches at one venue. A lot of cricket lovers believe that WIPL will bring in a revolution and the standard of women’s cricket in India will have a quantum leap.

Ten each in the next two venues in the 2024 season. For the 2025 season ten matches in the remaining one venue in one of the venues from 2023 season.” In terms of the naming of teams in Women’s IPL, yet to decide between a zone-wise or team-wise format.
