In a funny phone call with his former India teammate’s son, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed that the call was why Rahul Dravid became the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.
“When I got the call from him telling me his father was being too strict with him, I told him it was time for him to join the national team” Ganguly, speaking at the 40th Sharjah International Book Fair.
Earlier this week, India’s World T20 campaign came to an end and Ravi Shastri stepped down as coach. Dravid was named as the new head coach a week before that, for a two-year contract beginning with the T20 series against New Zealand at home. In addition to coaching India’s A team and U-19 side, he served as the NCA’s head for four years.
“Having spent most of our time together as kids, we made him feel welcome and wanted,” Ganguly said on a serious note, hailing his former teammate as a ‘tremendous ambassador’ of the sport.
“It is a great honour to be named the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team, and I am very excited to take on this responsibility. The team has performed admirably under Mr. Shastri’s leadership, and I look forward to working with him to continue this success.” BCCI quoted Dravid post his appointment!
