The first-ever TNPL 2023 Auction took place on Thursday after six editions of the league. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan hogged the limelight on Day 1 as he become the most expensive player at INR 21.6 lakh for Lyca Kovai Kings. Sanjay Yadav and Sonu Yadav, the brothers, also fetched big money on Day 1 of the auction.
India all-rounder Washington Sundar (Madurai Panthers) bagged and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy (Dindigul Dragons) bagged INR 6.75 lakh each. Premier India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was retained by Dindigul Dragons took some time out from his national duty against Australia, as he was present during the TNPL 2023 Auction on Day 1.
Dragons skipper R. Ashwin welcomed the auction format saying, “I always thought the draft wasn’t a fair system. The idea behind the draft is that it distributes the players evenly to teams. But as always, the perception changes, and if a team fails to get a player it wants in a draft, it could affect their combination badly. I hope teams will be evenly matched as this presents an opportunity to create a level playing field.”
Kovai Kings skipper M. Shahrukh Khan said, “Sai (Sudharsan) has been an important member for us in the last two years. With his impact in big games, he is a certainty in our team. Since he was released, the plan was to go all out for him as long as possible.”
