In Match 61 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 saw the five times IPL winner Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face off against the inaugural champions of IPL Rajasthan Royals (RR) at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. In the game, RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to bat first, aiming to set a challenging target for the CSK team. Although RR had a decent start, they lost key wickets early on, putting them in a difficult position against CSK. Despite this, Riyan Parag’s innings of 47 runs off 31 balls provided some stability. Ultimately, RR managed to score 141/5 by the end of the first innings.

The target wasn’t overly challenging compared to other scores in this IPL season. The slow Chepauk pitch posed some difficulty for CSK batters. Nonetheless, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 42* off 41 balls led Chennai Super Kings to a 5-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals, second on the points table. On that note let us look at some of the notable moments from the game;

1. Simarjeet Singh and Tushar Deshpande were exceptional with the ball

Simarjeet Singh showcased stellar performance in the match against Rajasthan Royals, crucial for the Yellow Army’s victory. He secured three wickets, conceding only 26 runs in four overs with an economy rate of 6.50. Notably, he dismissed key batters Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Jos Buttler, contributing to the team’s successful containment of RR to a low score. Not only him but it was also Tushar Deshpande who was brilliant with the ball in hand. He ended the match with a bowling figure of 2/30 and certainly dented any chances of RR scoring huge runs at the end of their innings.

2. Ravindra Jadejaโ€™s dismissal

During the CSK vs MI league stage match at Chepauk, Ravindra Jadeja of the Chennai Super Kings was dismissed for obstructing the field. While attempting to score a double after hitting the ball to deep third, the RR skipper-wicketkeeper’s throw struck Jadeja’s elbow instead of hitting the wickets on the other side. Following review by the third umpire, Jadeja was declared out. Remarkably, this marks the third occurrence of such an incident in IPL history.

3. Riyan Parag was the lone warrior for RR

Riyan Parag showcased his prowess in the league stage match against CSK, standing out as a key performer for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024. With an impressive knock of 47 runs off 31 balls, he played a pivotal role in helping his team post a total of 141 against the home team. Parag’s innings was crucial in stabilizing RR’s score, especially as the top order faltered early on, with players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, and Sanju Samson failing to make significant contributions against the Chennai Super Kings.

4. Captain Ruturaj leading the chase

CSK effortlessly achieved the target, reaching 145/5 in just 18.2 overs. Rachin Ravindra’s quick 27 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s undefeated 42 were pivotal in anchoring CSK’s innings. Additionally, Daryl Mitchell and Shivam Dube provided valuable contributions with 22 and 18 runs respectively. Gaikwad has been sublime in this yearโ€™s IPL and it also seems that he is enjoying his batting despite having the role of captaincy. ย In this yearโ€™s IPL, Gaikwad has smashed 583 runs at an average of 58.30 and a strike rate of 141.50.
