India, one of the first teams to qualify for the second round of the 2024 T20 World Cup, is now gearing up for the crucial Super-8 stage. The Indian Cricket team has been a source of cricketing entertainment, delivering some outstanding performances in specific game departments.

However, their path to the Super-8 is challenging. Mainly with opponents like Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Australia, who are in top form in the shortest format. This analysis delves into these significant challenges that could impact the team’s game plan and how it can overcome for the upcoming Super-8 and final rounds.

1. The Opening Pair Dilemma

There is no denying the commendable recent performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the T20I openers. They have provided a strong foundation and attacking intent to the rest of the batting unit. However, with their recent matches in the group-stage format, Virat Kohli has had a forgettable stint. As the opening partner with Rohit Sharma, it has affected the captain’s aggressive approach.

As a strategic move, they can bring in Yashavi Jaiswal as Rohit’s opening companion. It will help in leveraging his familiarity with the West Indies condition. This decision, along with Kohli’s return to his No.3 spot, could be crucial in his usual business of scoring runs, instilling confidence in the team’s strategic thinking.

2. Lack of depth in the middle order and its revamping

In India’s group-stage matches, the team needs to be more pleasing with the bat, as they have been restricted to a mere score against Pakistan. While the rest of the matches were low-scoring chases, their bleak display of middle-order batting didn’t give them a finish with efficient performances. With the conditions being one of the factors, it is evident that the batting unit of Shivam Dube, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja created the team to helm the responsibility.

While a few players on the team have been tremendous with the bat, a few players have been forgettable and might need to work on them. As a measure, they can bolster their middle order by giving call-ups to its substitutes and reserves. They can use the likes of Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh, who can make the most of the opportunity and create an impact.

3. Kickstarting the bowling campaign with a wicket-taking connoisseur

To elaborate, this refers to giving the new ball to the experienced and impeccable wicket-taker, Jasprit Bumrah. He has had a dream start in the ongoing tournament. He has the potential to scalp early wickets in the powerplay and enhance the batting arsenal’s pressure.

However, in the recent Indian group-stage matchup, they didn’t follow that, and this could be a bit dangerous for the team, especially when they are up against formidable sides in the Super-8. By facing an experienced campaign, it is evident that the team have faced such a challenge at a microscopic level. Still, it can be significant in the coming stages of the team’s future in the tournament.
