The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has raised concerns about the pitch at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, lodging an unofficial complaint to the International Cricket Council (ICC). This comes just before India’s crucial T20 World Cup match against Pakistan on June 9, following several player injuries attributed to the pitch’s unpredictable nature.

Background of the Pitch Issue

The New York pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium has been scrutinized since the start of the tournament. Historically, the venue has faced challenges in preparing a consistent playing surface, and recent matches have highlighted significant problems, including uneven bounce and low scores.

BCCI’s Unofficial Complaint

The BCCI’s concerns stem from several incidents during practice sessions and matches. Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s injuries have been particularly alarming, prompting the BCCI to raise an unofficial complaint. The complaint aims to bring attention to the pitch’s condition and urge the ICC to take corrective action before the crucial match against Pakistan.

Rohit Sharma’s Injuries

During a practice session, Rohit Sharma was hit on the thumb by a delivery from throwdown specialist Nuwan, compounding an earlier injury he sustained against Ireland. In that match, Rohit was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the biceps by a delivery from Ireland’s pacer Joshua Little. These injuries have affected his performance and raised concerns about player safety on the New York pitch.

Pitch Criticism and ICC’s Acknowledgment

In response to the growing concerns, the ICC released a statement acknowledging the issues with the pitches used at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The statement recognized that the pitches had not played as consistently as expected and assured stakeholders that efforts were being made to improve the conditions.

“The ICC recognise that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted,” the statement read.

Pitch Performance in Previous Matches

The statistics from the initial matches at the venue paint a concerning picture. Teams have surpassed the 100-run mark only twice out of six innings across three games. These low scores indicate significant difficulties in batting, largely attributed to the unpredictable nature of the pitch.

Safety Concerns for Players

The New York pitch’s uneven bounce and unpredictable nature have raised serious safety concerns. Rohit Sharma’s injuries are a testament to the risks posed to players, prompting calls for immediate measures to ensure safer playing conditions. The ICC and ground staff are under pressure to address these concerns swiftly.

“I don’t know what to expect from the pitch to be honest. We will prepare as if the conditions are going to be like this (for Pakistan game). This is going to be a kind of game where all XI of us will need to contribute,” Rohit had said after the game against Ireland.

Preparation for the India-Pakistan Match

India is adapting its strategy to handle the challenging pitch conditions. Rohit Sharma mentioned that the team is preparing for a game where every player must contribute due to the unpredictable nature of the surface. This mindset will be crucial for their performance against Pakistan.
