To secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy, England, captained by Jos Buttler, faces the imperative of winning their remaining matches. Nevertheless, their prospects have diminished following a defeat to India.
The Champions Trophy will be contested by the top seven teams from the World Cup league stage, along with the host nation, Pakistan. It’s worth noting that Pakistan currently holds the Champions Trophy, having triumphed over India in the 2017 final.
The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup has seen 28 matches completed, with ten teams vying for the prestigious trophy. Yet, beyond the World Cup glory, there’s another prize at stake in this cricketing spectacle: determining the participants for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Significantly, the top seven teams in the ongoing World Cup’s league stage, alongside host nation Pakistan, will secure direct qualification for the Champions Trophy. This qualification system was established by the ICC Board in 2021. Nevertheless, some cricket boards have expressed surprise and confusion about the qualification process for the next ICC ODI event.
Among the major teams at risk of missing out on qualification is England, the reigning World Champions, currently occupying the bottom of the points table with just one win in six matches. Consequently, the Jos Buttler-led team faces a critical challenge in the remaining World Cup fixtures. They must salvage their pride and secure a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The Three Lions have only three matches remaining against Australia, Netherlands, and Pakistan, necessitating their top performance to climb the points table. It’s worth noting that the current qualification process differs from the one employed in the last two Champions Trophy editions in 2013 and 2017, where teams in the top eight of the ICC ODI rankings at a specific cutoff date earned direct qualification.
