Australia’s World Cup Campaign Suffers Another Setback as Mitchell Marsh Returns Home for Personal Reasons, Forcing Him Out of England Clash
The Australian cricket team faces a significant hurdle in their World Cup journey as star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been compelled to fly back home to Perth due to personal reasons, rendering him unavailable for the upcoming England match in Ahmedabad on Saturday. This development follows Glenn Maxwell’s earlier withdrawal from the game due to a concussion sustained during a golf event on Monday.
Cricket Australia officially announced Marsh’s return home in a statement issued on Thursday. The statement read, “Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has departed from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 late last night for personal reasons. A timeline for his return to the squad is yet to be determined, and no further details will be disclosed at this time.”

While Marcus Stoinis is expected to be fit and ready to rejoin the team after recovering from a minor calf issue that sidelined him for the last two matches against the Netherlands and New Zealand, Cameron Green is also likely to make a return. Additionally, Marnus Labuschagne is anticipated to retain his position in the middle order. With Marsh’s absence, Australia will have just 13 available players for the England clash, with Sean Abbott and Alex Carey being the only other options in the squad.
Marsh’s absence also implies that Steven Smith will likely return to his preferred position at No.3. This setback significantly impacts Australia’s team balance, as two of their most explosive and destructive players, Marsh and Maxwell, will be missing in the crucial match against England as they strive to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
