Australia and England continued their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, facing off in the 17th match of the tournament at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, on Saturday, June 8. A match which promised a close contest eventually ended in an one way traffic with Australian thrashing England by 36 runs and going on the top of the table in Group B. This is also Australia’s second victory in two matched that they have played. On the other hand, the England team have faced their first loss and are at fourth spot in the group.

Australian batters thrash English bowlers 

The game began with the Aussies batting first after losing the toss. The team started strong with openers Travis Head and David Warner scoring 34 and 39 runs, respectively. Mitchell Marsh contributed 35 runs, while Glenn Maxwell added 28 runs. Marcus Stoinis continued his good form, scoring 30 runs off 17 deliveries, helping Australia post a total of 201 runs in the first innings. For England, Chris Jordan was the leading wicket-taker with two wickets. Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone, Jofra Archer, and Moeen Ali each claimed one wicket. 

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood choke England 

Aiming to chase down a target of 202 runs, England got off to a flying start. Openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler scored 37 and 42 runs, respectively. Despite the strong start, the rest of the batters couldn’t capitalize. Will Jacks departed after scoring just 10 runs, and Jonny Bairstow added only seven before being dismissed. Moeen Ali and Harry Brook tried to stabilize the innings, scoring 25 and 20 runs, respectively, but their efforts fell short. Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa were the standout bowlers for Australia, each taking two wickets. Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stoinis chipped in with one wicket each. England managed to score only 165 runs, losing the game by 36 runs.
