The key Group A T20 World Cup 2024 match between the United States of America and Ireland, scheduled to be held at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, was called off due to persistent rain on Friday.
Broward County, situated in the southeastern part of Florida, has been experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rainfall over the past two days. The forecast for Friday remained grim, with a 70 percent chance of rain, and with less than two hours to go for the match, the chance of rain in Broward County increased to 100 percent.
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Centre had earlier warned, “There is a High Risk of Excessive Rainfall leading to Flash Flooding over parts of southern Florida for tonight.”
Moreover, the Nepal versus Sri Lanka match at this venue was also abandoned without a ball bowled on June 12.
Pakistan eliminated after today’s match called off
It was predicted to spell doom for Ireland and Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaigns. With the match was officially called off due to persistent rain on Friday, USA’s progression to the Super Eight was confirmed as their tally swells to five points. Even if Ireland and Pakistan won their last Group Stage matches, they would only be able to take their points tally to three and four, respectively.

Umpires conducted an inspection at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium and found the pitch to be in good condition, but damp patches further from the wicket were causing concern. These patches were still oozing water, raising the likelihood of the USA vs Ireland match being called off. A final inspection was scheduled after this. Despite the groundsmen’s efforts, the stubborn patches on the outfield remain a significant obstacle, though there was still a slim chance for a 5-over game. But it was also not executed.

After multiple inspection, umpires conducted the final check on today’s scheduled match in Florida. With rain starting to fall and covers being brought on, the match is officially abandoned. As a result, the USA have clinched a berth in the Super Eights and secured a spot in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup.
With the abandonment of the USA vs Ireland T20 World Cup match due to rain, the USA have qualified for the Super Eights, marking the seventh instance of an associate team progressing from the group stage to the Super stage (8/10/12) in T20 World Cups. This follows the footsteps of Ireland (2009), Netherlands (2014), Afghanistan (2016), Namibia (2021), Scotland (2021), and the Netherlands (2022).
India have already qualified as the top team from Group A after winning its first three matches in the tournament.
This match called off leaves Ireland and Pakistan in a precarious position, severely impacting their chances of advancing further in the tournament.
