The West Indies secured their second win of the T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 134-run victory over Uganda in Guyana on Sunday, June 9. Akeal Hosein starred with the ball, dismantling the Ugandan batting order with an impressive spell, leading to Uganda’s joint-lowest total in T20 World Cup history.

West Indies innings: Charles and Russell shine

The match at Providence Stadium saw West Indies win the toss and opt to bat first on a slow deck. The West Indies faced a challenging start, with Uganda’s bowlers keeping things tight. Johnson Charles anchored the innings, scoring a steady 44 off 42 balls, while Nicholas Pooran provided some fireworks before being dismissed by Uganda’s skipper Brian Masaba.

The middle order struggled to maintain momentum until Andre Russell’s late blitz. Russell’s power hitting in the final overs, including four boundaries in the last over, propelled West Indies to a competitive total of 173 for 5 in their 20 overs.

Akeal Hosein’s spell: Five wickets for 11 runs

Akeal Hosein was the standout performer of the match. His opening spell was nothing short of magical, as he tore through Uganda’s top order with a combination of swing and seam. Hosein’s control and variation were too much for Uganda’s batters to handle. His figures of 5 for 11 in 4 overs included the key dismissal of Riazat Ali Shah with a delivery that swung late to crash into the stumps. This performance marked Hosein’s first T20I career five-wicket haul.

Uganda’s struggles: Joint-lowest total in T20 World Cup history

Uganda’s chase never took off as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Hosein struck with the second ball of the innings, dismissing Roger Mukasa, and Romario Shepherd followed up by removing Simon Ssesazi in the second over. Uganda was reduced to 23 for 7 by the time Hosein completed his spell. Despite some resistance from individual players, Uganda’s innings ended at 39 runs, tying their record for the joint-lowest total in T20 World Cup history.

Several key moments defined the match, starting with the early dismissals by Hosein that set the tone. Contributions from Johnson Charles and Andre Russell ensured West Indies posted a challenging total, while Hosein’s disciplined bowling maintained pressure throughout Uganda’s innings.

Akeal Hosein was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match for his incredible spell. Reflecting on his performance, Hosein said, “I think I needed this. In the nets and in the previous series, I felt like the ball was coming out of my hand good. I think I was doing everything right in the nets but I just wasn’t getting the rewards. Just have to stay calm and it’ll be my turn soon. (Favourite wicket) I think I’ll go with the regular finger spinner one, that was my favourite. It’s a lot of hard work (to perform at this level), especially when you start getting success.”

West Indies’ comprehensive victory over Uganda showcased their dominance in both batting and bowling. Hosein’s incredible spell underlined his importance to the team. Despite their efforts, Uganda was outclassed and will need to regroup and learn from this experience. The West Indies will now prepare to face New Zealand on June 13, while Uganda looks to bounce back in their next match.
