Deepti Sharma’s valiant 88-run innings stood out amidst UP Warriorz’s disappointing 8-run defeat to Gujarat Giants in a Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 group match. Despite her remarkable effort, the team’s loss inadvertently boosted RCB’s chances of reaching the playoffs in the WPL 2024.
In the clash against Gujarat Giants, UP Warriorz’s trio of spinners, comprising Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma, and Rajeswari Gayakwad, posed significant challenges. However, Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 74 provided some respite to the Giants, guiding them to a total of 152 for 8 on Monday.
The youthful fielders of UP Warriorz committed costly errors in catching and fielding, conceding an extra 25 runs. Despite Ecclestone’s impressive figures of 3/38 in 4 overs, Deepti’s 2/22 in 4 overs, and Gayakwad’s 1/28 in 4 overs, Mooney and Wolvaardt’s partnership of 60 runs in 7.5 overs laid a solid foundation for Gujarat Giants.
Nevertheless, the momentum shifted after Wolvaardt’s dismissal, as Ecclestone and Deepti tightened the screws, picking up crucial wickets. Gujarat Giants’ Indian players struggled, with Bharati Fulmali, Dayalan Hemlatha, and Tanuja Kanwer displaying weak game sense and shot selection.
Despite the underperformance of Phoebe Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner, Mooney and Wolvaardt carried the burden for Gujarat Giants. Mooney’s run-a-ball innings was aided by UP Warriorz’s fielding lapses, allowing her to score additional runs. Meanwhile, Shweta Sehrwat, Poonam Khemnar, and Saima Thakor of UP Warriorz still have a long way to go in terms of fielding competency at this level of cricket.
