In a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, Delhi Capitals (DC) secured their spot in the final of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 with their sixth victory, defeating Gujarat Giants (GG) by seven wickets. This win also saw them top the points table at the end of the league stage, edging out the Mumbai Indians. DC finished with 12 points, while MI managed five wins and 10 points.
Chasing a target of 127, DC got off to a flying start as captain Meg Lanning dominated the powerplay with a flurry of boundaries. However, Lanning was unfortunately run out shortly after, followed by Alice Capsey falling to Tanuja Kanwar’s first wicket.
Despite these setbacks, Delhi remained composed, with Shafali Varma and Jemimah Rodrigues forming a crucial 94-run partnership. Varma showcased her attacking prowess, while Jemimah provided stability, guiding the team to victory. Although Varma fell for 71, Jemimah sealed the win with a boundary in the next over.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Capitals’ bowlers put up a disciplined performance to restrict Gujarat Giants to 126 for nine. Bharati Fulmali’s 42 and Kathryn Bryce’s unbeaten 28 were vital for the Giants, preventing a lower total. Marizanne Kapp led the bowling attack with impressive figures of 2/17 in four overs, particularly shining in the powerplay.
Gujarat Giants’ decision to bat first didn’t go as planned, losing key wickets early on and finding themselves at 39/4 in the ninth over. Despite the initial struggle, Fulmali and Bryce’s partnership of 68 runs helped them cross 120, giving their bowlers something to defend.
With this win, Delhi Capitals now await the winner of the WPL Eliminator match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, which is scheduled for Friday, March 15th.
