David Warner's retirement time? This will most likely be my last year of international cricket

Australia opener David Warner has hinted at his retirement, saying this will most likely be the last year of his international career. David Warner is set to be part of the Australia team that will travel to India for the Border-Gavaskar series in February. Speaking ahead of his Big Bash League match, David Warner said this is probably his last year in international cricket. But said that his sights are set on the 2024 T20 World Cup.

“[This will] most likely be my last year of my international career. I’ve got my sights set on the 2024 [T20] World Cup as well, so finishing in the Americas. That’d be nice to top it off with a win over there, pending selection,” said Warner. David Warner has racked up over 17,000 runs across all formats, including 8,132 in Test cricket. Since making his debut in a T20I against South Africa in 2009. The 36-year-old ended his Test century drought by smashing a double century against South Africa in his 100th Test match.

David Warner reveals regarding his last international assignment

Speaking to reporters in December, Warner said the extra motivation for him is winning the Border-Gavaskar series in India and the Ashes 2023 series. “The extra motivation for me is winning in India and completely winning a series in England. I’ve been told by the coach and the selectors they would like me to be there,” said Warner. David Warner said he still has the hunger and determination to continue playing, adding that he did had doubts over his longevity in mind.

“Was there doubt? Of course there was doubt in my mind but for me it was about going out there and knowing that. I’ve still got that hunger and determination because every time I rock up to training, I’ve got it. People keep telling me, ‘you’ll know when it’s time’. I haven’t really felt that at all yet,” Warner added. The T20 World Cup is being jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States in June next year. Warner also revealed his plans for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series in India. Warner who missed out on the 2018-19 edition of the contest tried to contribute in the 2020-21 series but the Indian side was way too good for the Aussies as they clinched the series by 2-1.
