In the first of the five T20I series, Australia defeated India by nine wickets with 11 balls remaining thanks to Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 89. After Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh’s fireworks helped India post a competitive total of 172 for 5, Mooney and Tahlia McGrath shared an unbroken 100-run stand off 56 balls for the second wicket to steal the show. Ghosh, Deepti’s late flourish after rapid start
Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma got India off to a good start after being put in, with Verma scoring 21 off ten balls with two fours and two sixes. When Jemimah Rodrigues mistimed her delivery of Ellyse Perry to mid-on, she was out for a six-ball duck in the fifth over. India ended the powerplay at 48 for 2 thanks to Mandhana’s 28 off 22, despite his initial inability to time the ball.
Australia pulled things back in the center stage, with Annabel Sutherland excusing Mandhana in the eighth over. When Harmanpreet Kaur attempted to loft debutant Kim Garth over cover but ended up hitting straight to the fielder, she was run out in the 12th over, ending her innings with a 23-ball 21.
With the help of five fours and two sixes, Ghosh smashed 36 in just 20 deliveries while the team was at 76-4. Ghosh put together a crucial 56-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Devika Vaidya, who was playing a T20I for the first time in eight years.
Deepti went crazy right away after Ashleigh Gardner stumped Ghosh in the 17th over. The all-rounder hit two fours in the 18th and 19th overs, respectively, before smashing four fours off Megan Schutt in the 20th over to get India to a respectable total. Deepti was unbeaten on 36 with eight boundaries in 15 deliveries, and Vaidya was unbeaten on 25 out of 24.
