Mohammad Shami is one of the most skillful bowlers in India. He has a huge bag of tricks, and picks up wickets regardless of the phase of the game. One of his deliveries to Finn Allen is enough to highlight his swing. After three outswingers, an inswinger with no wobble and a completely upright seam lead to perfection as Shami hit Finn Allen’s off stump.
Mohammad Shami, despite playing fewer games was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2019 World Cup. He had a really good tournament but did not get too many opportunities with workload and competition after the World Cup. Up until a couple months before the T20 World Cup, Shami was discarded from the T20 side completely as India looked for young talent. With Bumrah injured though, Shami found his way back into the T20 side and is now getting a decent run again in the ODI side.
Initially seen as a strike-bowler, Mohammad Shami is now working in all phases. He is picking up wickets in the middle-overs, and nailing his yorkers in the death. Up front, with Mohammad Siraj, he has been bowling well with the new-ball, maintaining a Test match length.
Among the options, he is one of the faster bowlers too. With Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna injured and Umran Malik failing to break due to batting depth, Shami is stepping up with his pace. Shami’s flexibility and ability to make things happen was evident in the second ODI. With Michael Bracewell threatening to create another fightback, Mohammad Shami, who was taken apart in the first ODI by the same batter made some changes. He came around the stumps, and bowled a short ball nicely which led to a top edge to the keeper.
In both ODIs, he did well to create pressure up front. Up until the 10th over, Shami maintained his pace and line as he consistently threatened the edge. Now, along with the batters edge, Shami is threatening to find a consistent place in the ODI side ahead of the World Cup. He remains back-up to the main bowlers in ODI Cricket, but he certainly is a very nice back-up to have.
