Phil Salt has opened in his six ODIs for England up to this point – however could supplant Ben Stokes in midfield against South Africa. Phil Salt will hope to “take his chance with both hands” assuming that he replaces Ben Stokes in England’s one-day global normal request.

Stokes declared his retirement from over 50 cricket on Monday with Tuesday’s 62-match route to South Africa in Durham in his 105th and last round of the arrangement.

Salt, the back-up hitter in the England team, has opened each of his six ODIs to date, with the Lancashire man hitting 100, against the Netherlands recently, and two fifty.

In any case, the right-handed player has played in midfield in his four T20I appearances and accepts he can adjust to his game whenever given the gesture in the second ODI at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday.

“Obviously whenever you get the chance to play for England you have to take it with both hands. This is my first chance to join a full lineup and to be in the conversation because it’s been part of the team, it’s been exciting. I’ve been on the sidelines for a while. time so I want to go in there and show what I can do. Netherlands, West Indies, Pakistan – I’ve proven to everyone and myself that I can do it. Now it’s about going out there and doing it again and I’ll go wherever the opportunity is. I’m very aware that the best players in the world can play anywhere, who can adapt, improvise and find different ways to get things done in any situation. The skill is to read the transcript and the conditions and assess what you need to do – I think it’s as simple as that.”

Britain’s loss to South Africa in the series opener at Chester-le-Street implies they have lost three of their last four ODIs – and taken out of them.

“We’ve lost a few senior players and leaders but we still have a lot of senior players and leaders so I don’t think we want to play there’s too much of a change in the way we play. The best of the action in the first day-long international between England and South Africa, a game that Proteas won by 62 runs. I don’t think there’s any pressure in the dressing room. We know what we need to do and how good we are. It’s about getting your chest out, pushing the boundaries and proving it again. That’s what made this squad world champions.”
