Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav played pivotal roles in guiding India to a respectable total of 171 for 7 in their 20 overs against England at Providence Stadium, Guyana in the second semi-final of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. After a shaky start, with India at 40 for 2 in 5.2 overs, the pair steadied the innings with a solid 73-run partnership.

Key Performances

Rohit Sharma scored a crucial 57 off 39 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav contributed 47 off 36. Their efforts were instrumental in pulling India out of trouble and setting a competitive target. Chris Jordan was the standout bowler for England, taking 3 wickets for 37 runs.

England’s Early Advantage

England’s captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first. The decision initially seemed to pay off as India lost two early wickets. Virat Kohli’s struggles continued, and Rishabh Pant, batting at number three, couldn’t make a significant impact.

The vital partnership

When India found themselves in a precarious situation, Rohit and Suryakumar stepped up. Despite a 75-minute rain delay, they assessed the conditions well and mixed caution with aggression both before and after the break. Rohit reached his half-century before getting out, while Suryakumar fell just three runs short of his fifty. Their contributions were crucial in executing India’s plans and setting a challenging target.

Middle overs and finishing touches

England’s spinners, Rashid and Livingstone, bowled economical spells during the middle overs, applying pressure on the Indian batsmen. However, Hardik Pandya played a quick cameo to boost the score before Jordan dismissed him in the 18th over. Shivam Dube was out for a golden duck, but Ravindra Jadeja added valuable runs towards the end, helping India cross the 170-run mark.

Reece Topley got 6 for 24, his best figures in ODI cricket, featured with the ball as England crushed India by 100 runs in the second ODI at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. With this success, England evened out the three-match series 1-1 in front of the last game in Manchester on Sunday.

Subsequent to being placed in, England were themselves all out for 246 of every 49 overs, with Yuzvendra Chahal getting 4 for 47. In any event, getting to the extent that that was just potential because of a 62-run seventh-wicket stand between Moeen Ali and David Willey.

It seemed to be a harmless all out at the innings break yet India were in for a shock.

Topley and Willey tracked down the development and additional skip to decrease India to 31 for 4 in the twelfth over. The recuperation never truly came, and their long tail – Mohammed Shami emerged at No. 8 – didn’t help their cause either. Eventually, they were bundled out for 146 in 38.5 overs.

Pursuing a total of 247, India were bowled out for a pitiful of 146 in 38.5 overs. Topley got back with figures of six for 24, the best by an England bowler at Lord’s. Prior, Yuzvendra Chahal featured with the ball as India bowled out England for 246 in the on going ODI at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium in London. Subsequent to being placed into bat, England started off very strong with openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

Hardik Pandya gave India the main forward leap as he dismissed Roy. Bairstow was then excused by Chahal, who likewise got the better of Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Mohammed Shami fortified Jos Buttler to hold under the syphon, yet Moeen Ali and David Willey’s thump of 47 and 41 assisted England with setting a difficult all out on the board. Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah likewise finished their spells with two wickets each while Prasidh Krishna also figured out how to take a wicket.

Career best figures for Topley, who joined with Willey to set the vibe for a quiet beginning by India.

Prior to the day, Jasprit Bumrah and Shami bowled a testing spell with the new ball, utilising the early dampness in the surface to inconvenience Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

Jason Roy looked the more provisional of the two England openers, getting beaten reliably on both inside and outside edge. Be that as it may, assuming the karma was with the Indian bowlers in the first ODI, where free drives brought endlessly edges found defenders, England were the lucky side on Thursday.

Subsequent to beating the outside edge of the two openers on various occasions, Shami tracked down within edge of Roy’s bat in the fifth over. But, the ball missed the stumps and went for four. In Shami’s next over, Bairstow tossed his bat at a length ball, got an outside edge, and got four through the equally emptied second slip region.

In the initial ten overs, the England batters played 22 misleading shots, same as  they did in that period in the first ODI. At The Oval those brought about five wickets; here they brought India only one wicket.

That one wicket was of Roy, who figured out how to get by against Bumrah and Shami yet tumbled to a half-volley from Hardik Pandya. He endeavoured a flick yet the bat turned in his grasp, bringing about a basic opportunity at a deep-backward square leg.

Jonny Bairstow, however, had begun looking risky and had moved to 38 off 37 balls when he went for a trudge clear against Chahal, just to miss it totally with the ball clacking into the leg stump.

Before long, Chahal heaved one to Joe Root who excessively neglected to interface the scope and was caught lbw. In the following over, Shami fortified Jos Buttler with a full conveyance to make it 87 for 4.

Ben Stokes attempted to take on Chahal, hitting four opposite clears in succession, two of them getting him fours. Nonetheless, it was the very shot against the very bowler that brought about his excusal, lbw for 21.

Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik had recently begun the rebuilding process when Topley struck once more, with Suryakumar hacking one onto his stumps. Hardik and Ravindra Jadeja took the side beyond 100 preceding Hardik top-edged a draw against Moeen to deep midwicket.

Jadeja and Shami added 39 for the seventh wicket yet that only delayed the unavoidable. Towards the end, Topley bowled Chahal for his maiden five-wicket pull and wrapped up the game three balls later.

3rd T20I: India came out chasing a gigantic target of 221, yet were shocked early as they lost the Big three — Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli. Yet, Suryakumar Yadav paired well with Shreyas Iyer and they forged a 100 and more run stand to drive England to the edge.

England beats India by 17 runs (Image Source: Cricket Addictor)

India stayed in the game till the penultimate over where Yadav was excused and they missed the mark by 17 runs.

England players made the most of the batting heaven at Trent Bridge as Dawid Malan (77) and Liam Livingstone (42*) assisted them with posting an imposing 215/7 in 20 overs. India missed the services of the senior bowling stars as spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2/30) and Harshal Patel (2/35) were the only saviours for them. It will be an immense undertaking for the Indian batting line-up to chase down a mammoth total like this despite short boundaries..

England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat against India in the third T20I match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. India rolled out four changes to their side as Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Umran Malik and Shreyas Iyer got an opportunity instead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal and Hardik Pandya. It was a major gamble for India which they can manage with a 2-0 lead in the series. While England likewise made a couple changes.

Rohit Sharma and Co. played dominant cricket in the initial two matches of the series and took an unassailable 2-0 lead. On Sunday, they were hoping to finish the whitewash however the spotlight was on previous India captain Virat Kohli who has been going through a lean fix. An unfortunate trip at Edgbaston has by and by put Kohli in a difficult spot.

India put in-form Deepak Hooda on the seat to clear a path for Kohli in the second T20I who was excused on only 1 by Richard Gleeson. Notwithstanding, returning Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah urged their rebound to the T20I side after a short break.

The guests took a bold move by picking Rishabh Pant as the opener in the second T20I. Pant showed a brief look of his attacking approach at the top yet failed to change over a decent start to a major score. He was dismissed on 26 runs off 15 balls.

The stand-out innings of the game went in vain majorly because of the fact that India’s top order came unraveled.

Trent Bridge has ostensibly pushed the limits of white-ball cricket farther than some other international ground in recent times, and Sunday’s third T20I contained an innings that did exactly that.

It didn’t come as a winning reason, yet it highlighted what the future of T20 batting could potentially look like.

Suryakumar Yadav scored 117 off 55 balls, and he did this in a pursuit of 216 where no other India batter passed 30 and just a single other passed 20. He did this with a control percentage of almost 91%. That is a magnificent figure in a Test inning and a decidedly surreal one in the shortest format. For huge swathes of his innings, he appeared to hit any line or length to any part of the field he wished to target, and England’s bowlers could apparently never really contain him.

There were never sufficient boundaries fielders when Suryakumar was on strike, yet he was off strike frequently enough for England to stay in charge of the game. Also, at last, the target stayed just past India’s compass. En route, nonetheless, Suryakumar guaranteed that he’ll be one of the first names in India’s team sheet, wellness allowing, when the World Cup rolls round in October.

Jason Roy

Jason Roy struggled in the first game with the ball swinging. His explosive approach though is a huge threat and it is only a matter of time before Roy takes on the bowling, negating any advantage thanks to the playing conditions. England vs India: India came out with a new style of play in the first T20, looking to be aggressive. The batters seemed content with scores in the 30s at higher strike rates and this allowed India to use their batting lineup well to get a good score. Now, there is a slight headache. The Test stars are back but there is a question of who goes out. Another question is if Virat Kohli still warrants a place in the T20I XI, although he is still an asset in the format.

England is off to a shaky start in the Buttler era. The bowling was a concern coming into the game, but after the match, the batting also looks worrying. Although, the batting can be downplayed as a bad day for the English side, as they still possess a lot of talent in that department. With a bad day behind them, the upcoming games should see the batting line-up do their own magic soon.

Team News

  • England are likely to continue unchanged.
  • With Deepak Hooda looking undroppable after his recent performances, India is in with a headache. Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah are direct replacements for Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh, but fitting Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant is going to be a challenge. The likely swap could be Kohli opening in place of Ishan Kishan while Pant comes in for Suryakumar Yadav or Dinesh Karthik, who are both in pretty strong form at the moment.

Key Players

Chris Jordan

In an innings that finished with a run rate of nearly 10, Chris Jordan managed to walk out with an economy rate under six. Additionally, his variations will help as he looks to keep his place in the team.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli’s form continues to be in the spotlight. Although he has a fifty in his last T20I, his ability to bat quickly raises questions about whether he is still relevant in the format. He is still a class player though and has proven his ability to bat quickly with conventional cricketing shots. While India comes in ahead, England is likely to have their own say, and a cracker of a match is likely.

Chances of Rohit Sharma leading India in the Edgbaston Test against England have taken a back seat as the India captain has failed to recover from the Covid-19 infection, contracted during a warm-up game in Leicester last week. National selectors and team management have chosen to stand by till the latest possible second, as recently reported by Cricbuzz, stating that the captain has still not been ruled out.

Since testing positive last Saturday (June 25), Rohit has been in constant isolation, returning positive in each RT PCR test directed on him since. As a matter of fact, Rohit didn’t go with the team from Leicester to Birmingham on Monday (June 27). He went to the Warwickshire city independently. He failed a test even on Wednesday (June 29) leaving the team management and selectors considering alternatives.

Jasprit Bumrah is probably going to step in as captain if Rohit fails the wellness test on Thursday (June 30) morning.

Should that be the situation, Bumrah will be the first pacer, since Kapil Dev, to be given the reins of the team. The names of R Ashwin and Rishabh Pant were likewise talked about yet they failed in ultimate analysis.

The former is a dicey starter for the Test, given his new Covid-19 history, and the latter is ruled out because of his not-too-impressive record as skipper recently. Additionally, Bumrah’s vast international experience makes him the obvious choice in the ongoing situation.

The India coach refused to confirm if Bumrah will be the obvious choice for the captaincy.

“It is probably better if the communication comes from official sources. I am not sure where Chetan (Sharma, the chief selector) is, but once we have the exact clarity on Rohit, you will hear from the official sources. It’s not for me to give out official communication, It’s up to the medical team and the sports science team to decide. I haven’t had a chance to see him since he is in quarantine and isolation. We will keep monitoring the situation.”

The decision could be between Mayank Agarwal and KS Bharat with the former having an edge.

The July 1-5 Test is the fifth and final match of the five-game series that was suddenly stopped last year after a spate of Covid-19 cases in the Indian team. India lead the series 2-1.

An inconsistent India paid the price for a shoddy batting effort but England infused new life into their title defense with a four-wicket win in a league-stage game of the ICC Women’s World Cup, here on Wednesday. Inconsistency returned to haunt Indian batters as they were bundled out for a meager 134 by England, who chased down the target in 31.2 overs to record their first win in the tournament after a hat-trick of defeats. India got some runs on the board, thanks to the previous game’s centurion Smriti Mandhana, who top-scored for the side with a 35-run knock while wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh made 33. With wickets falling intermittently, England bowled out India in 36.2 overs.

England also made a stuttering start to their chase as they lost both their openers — Danni Wyatt (1) and Tammy Beaumont (1) — cheaply with the scoreboard reading four for two in the third over. Wyatt was first to depart in the second over, courtesy of a sensational diving catch by Sneh Rana off medium-pacer Meghna Singh (3/26). Veteran Jhulan Goswami, the highest wicket-taker in the history of the tournament, then trapped Beaumont in the second over after India went for the review. It was the 250th wicket for the pacer in ODIs. England skipper Heather Knight (53 not out) and Nat Sciver (45 off 46) then steadied England’s innings, playing cautiously to reach 34 for 2 in 10 overs.

While Knight played a captain’s knock by anchoring the chase, Sciver took the attack to the Indian bowlers, hitting as many as eight boundaries during her entertaining knock, in which she pulled off some pull shots. With just 135 required for a win, what England needed was a decent partnership after the early blows, and Knight and Sciver provided that by sharing 65 runs for the third wicket. Sciver’s innings were cut short by Pooja Vastrakar. It was a soft dismissal and against the run of play as Sciver spooned a length ball to Goswami while looking to work the ball on the on-side.

Amy Jones (10) then stitched a 33-run stand for the next wicket with Knight before the former fell to a stunning backward running catch by India vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur at mid-on off Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s bowling. By then it was all over for India by then as England needed just 32 more runs. The Indians picked up two more wickets in the 30th over before England completed the formality. Meghna dismissed Sophia Dunkley (17) and Katherine Brunt (0) within a span of three balls in identical fashion — caught behind by wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh.
