As usual, Virat Kohli did not stop expressing himself on the field, but many ex-players weren’t pleased with his actions. During the third and final Test against South Africa at Cape Town, the India Test captain went too far when he slammed a DRS decision against the hosts.

R Ashwin trapped Dean Elgar, who was left LBW by the Indian bowler until the DRS intervened to rescue him. In the event, Elgar was batting on 22 when Ashwin hit him with a tossed-up delivery that appeared plumb to the naked eye. As the ball tracked, it looked like it bounced uncharacteristically and passed above the stumps. Fielders in India were confused by the decision and questioned its scrutiny shortly afterward. Former India opener Aakash Chopra commented on Kohli’s on-field antics, saying that the outburst might have been a reaction to the heat, but he cautioned that it was not the right thing to do. I was agitated and frustrated, so even as I stared at the screen, I wondered, “How did it miss?” since it looked like it crashed into the stump.”

In any case, the former India player pointed out that this wasn’t the right move because it might lead to a negative perception of the umpires or the technology by kids watching the match. Keegan Peterson (48 batting) and Elgar (212 chasings) put on a critical 88-run stand for the second wicket on day three before Peterson was caught behind by Jasprit Bumrah. Eight wickets remain for South Africa with 111 runs required.
