Captaincy is 'part of the package' for RCB's new signing; he says leadership is a key component of the role

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction last week, Royal Challengers Bangalore signed former South African captain Faf du Plessis. On Day 1 of the auction, RCB picked Faf, who previously played for Chennai Super Kings (2011-2021, except in 2016 and 2017 when the franchise was banned) for *7 crores.

Faf revealed he was a member of the leadership group at Chennai Super Kings and often discussed key decisions with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Along with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who was retained by RCB, Faf is seen as one of the franchise’s potential captains with his arrival in the RCB squad. Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik, who had led the franchise in both 2019 and 2020, was also purchased by Bangalore in the auction. RCB captain Ajit Agarkar has now confirmed that he has considered leading the team.
“I considered the idea. A batsman and experience are part of the package for someone like me, but leadership is also part of the package. I have been doing it for a long time,” Faf stated during a recent press conference.

”I’ve also had the privilege of playing under great leaders. Yet, I have not discussed that with anyone so it has basically just been a thought. Whatever position I am in, there is always a leadership element and a lot of experience in the field that I can bring to the table. Faf said that while MS was captain, she would constantly talk to him and try to add value whenever she could,” he concluded.
