In a recent development preceding the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have opted to part ways with South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius.
Pretorius bids farewell to the CSK squad as the team gears up for IPL 2024. This decision follows his acquisition for ₹50 lakh in the 2023 auction, where he featured in just one match for CSK, failing to secure any wickets and maintaining an economy rate of 7.00.
Expressing gratitude on Instagram, Pretorius acknowledged the franchise, reflecting on his brief yet ‘EPIC’ journey with the team. “I would like to thank all the management, coaches, players, and fans for my time at CSK; it was an awesome experience. I learnt so much,” he shared in his heartfelt post.
CSK’s move to release Pretorius aligns with their strategic planning, taking into account the presence of Shivam Dube, who effectively fulfills the role of a fast-bowling all-rounder. The team boasts a formidable lineup of all-rounders, providing insight into the rationale behind their decision.
As the defending champions prepare for the players’ mini-auction scheduled for December 19 in Dubai, CSK, with a near-complete squad, focuses on fine-tuning their team composition, aiming to secure an unprecedented IPL record with another title win.

Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the franchise rebounded from their 2022 performance, clinching their fifth IPL trophy in 2023 and matching the Mumbai Indians’ record for the most title victories.
Concerns about Dhoni’s future with CSK have surfaced due to his knee condition, which troubled him throughout the 2023 season, leading to surgery. Recent sightings of Dhoni limping during a visit to his ancestral village in Uttarakhand have sparked worries among fans. However, with the IPL still months away, there is ample time for Dhoni to recover and potentially make a triumphant return to the field, much to the anticipation of Chennai’s avid supporters.
