David Warner truly is a man for the big moment. In a long career where he has had a huge share of ups and downs which resulted in some personality development, David Warner has seen it all. Over the last two years as well David Warner has had a few questions.
The first question was regarding his Test form. His numbers away from Australia were not the greatest initially, and his numbers at home were dropping too. A double-hundred at Sydney against South Africa boosted his Test stats in the last two years but big scores were far too little.
He got some starts in England and looked solid in his Final innings in Test Cricket in England. In white-ball Cricket David Warner was a lot more solid. He continued his consistency in getting starts and played in his usual fashion of batting positively while being very active with his running between the wickets. Big scores were eluding him though.
From January 2020 to February 2022, David Warner went without a century in ODI Cricket. The flip side though was his strike rate, which got better in the two-year period. He scored consistently in the 2021 T20 World Cup finishing as the man of the tournament. The tournament that followed though did not go as well with David Warner losing his opening partner Aaron Finch, who retired from international cricket after the 2022 T20 World Cup.
A constant part of the side from his debut, David Warner went silent for a brief period. At one point he was seen as competition for the Fab 4 of the generation. Runs though reduced as big scores eluded him despite Warner making significant contributions. Something that did not help in his favor was regularity. Opening partners were shuffled, Warner had a bad groin injury which impacted him for most of 2021, and was rested occasionally as well.
The last two months though have been a dream. Coming into his Final World Cup David Warner has found his former self in the last year. Starting with a strong series against England last year David Warner has been very consistent. With four half-centuries and a century in his last eight internationals and a strong start in the World Cup, the pocket rocket has found his touch.
His experience in the Indian conditions is well known and it was on display against India prior to the World Cup. In three ODIs David Warner went past fifty in each game. His running between the wickets and ability to find the boundary was as good as ever. Now, with a couple of days left, David Warner certainly looks a scary prospect. He got 647 runs in the last World Cup, 1 less than Rohit Sharma the leading scorer. He also was man of the tournament in the 20-over version in 2021.
His performances in recent years show that he knows and loves the big stage. In his Final World Cup David Warner will be hoping to go out looking really strong, proving that he is Australia’s best opener in the last decade by a far distance.
