Cricket fans around the world are eagerly awaiting Sunday’s high-voltage India vs. Pakistan clash. However, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has voiced significant concerns about the unpredictable nature of the Nassau County ground’s pitch, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the much-anticipated match.
The Nassau County ground pitch has been the center of attention for all the wrong reasons. Its inconsistent behavior has made it difficult for teams to predict how it will play on any given day. This unpredictability was evident in the recent match between the Netherlands and South Africa, where both teams struggled to maintain consistency in their batting.

Rohit Sharma candidly addressed the pitch issues, stating, “New York is not our home ground. We have played two matches here, but know that it behaves differently on different days, so even the curator is confused.”
His comments highlight the challenge of preparing for a game when the playing surface is an unknown entity.
The Nassau County pitch’s erratic behavior has left even the curator baffled. It has shown tendencies to be slow at times, offering uneven bounce that can catch batters off guard. This inconsistency makes it challenging for teams to plan their approach, as they don’t know which pitch they will face on match day.
In such conditions, adaptability is critical. Teams must be prepared to alter their strategies based on the pitch’s behavior on the day of the match. Rohit emphasized that playing good cricket and adapting to the conditions are crucial, saying, “Playing good cricket holds the key, not opposition, not pitch.”
With the outfield being slow, running between the wickets becomes even more critical. Batsmen need to be quick and decisive, capitalizing on every opportunity to take singles and convert them into twos. This game aspect will be vital in maximizing the score in such challenging conditions.
“So, you can imagine the kind of thinking we need to put in. We don’t know on which pitch we are playing (against Pakistan), so, whoever plays better cricket will win the match,” he added.
The Indian skipper also pointed out that the slowness of the outfield had also added to the team’s worries ahead of the high voltage clash.
“The outfield is slow. Some shots get lot of bounce on the field, and some others do not roll on the field. So running between the wickets is important. We need to play as per conditions,” he said.
Rohit Sharma highlighted the importance of experience in dealing with these challenges. Players like him and Rishabh Pant, who have faced tricky situations, must use their expertise to navigate the uneven bounce and slow outfield. “The blows count for nothing,” he said, referring to their resilience in overcoming difficult conditions.
The recent match between the Netherlands and South Africa on the same pitch offers some insights. Both teams struggled to score big, indicating that the pitch does not favor high-scoring games. This match ended as a low-scoring thriller, previewing what might happen in the India vs Pakistan clash.
Acknowledging the pitch problems, the organizers have worked diligently to improve the playing surface. They said, “The world-class grounds team has been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches.” Despite these efforts, the unpredictability remains a concern.
