The opening game of the three–match ODI series between South Africa and West Indies gets underway on Thursday afternoon. South Africa lost their last match in this format, by 59 runs against England in February. West Indies were beaten by New Zealand in their last ODI, back in August against New Zealand. South Africa will not have many of their best players available for this game but will still be able to put out a strong side. Whether it will be good enough to beat West Indies remains to be seen. West Indies have struggled in this format for a long time but have plenty of quality white ball players.

We expect to see a good cricket wicket with neither bat or ball overly favoured by the pitch. There will be some turn for the spinners and a par score will be around 320.

With South Africa choosing to rest some of their big name bowlers, and also leaving out some of their other top players for the first two ODIs, this opening match of the series could well be a lot closer than some pundits are predicting. Hendricks has hit one hundred and five half-centuries in this format. We expect West Indies to compete throughout the game but think South Africa have more batting depth. Considering the team combination, South Africa is expected to win this match.
